Once upon a time... 140 years tradition

We are in Berlin end of the 19. century: the mechanic Franz Schmidt is working in his small shop for scientific devices located in the Alexandrinenstraße. At the same time the mechanic and optician Herrmann Haensch managed a little company in the Adalbertstraße 82 and later in the Karlsstraße 8.
In April 1864 the idea was born to start a joint enterprise. The inheritance of 8000 Taler was used as initial capital for the new established company. Today the company is proudly looking back to its more than 140 years heritage. Now the independent, family owned company is managed by the fifth generation.

The picture to your left shows one of the first Pulfrich Refractometers, developed and produced by Schmidt+Haensch. Alongside, a quartz wedge Saccharimeter is represented, which operates according to a principle developed by the company. Actually, the Saccharomat is still working in conformity to this principle.

Some of the instruments from the very beginning are exhibited today in museums around the world (e.g. Berlin, Munich, Paris, New York).

Based on an actually very high level of precision mechanics and optics, today automatic refractometers and polarimeters as well as colour measuring devices are being produced and distributed all over the globe.
Additionally, under the brand name ISIS, the company produces and distributes drawing machines, digitizers, quickly and infinetely variable computer workshop places and filing systems since 1951.
Nowadays, the domain of laboratory measuring instruments is being completed by process technique and automation, in order to satisfy the need for on-line information processing and process control.

Because of the module structure of the opto-electronical measuring systems a high flexibility and possibility to built particularily customer specified systems is achieved.

Schmidt+Haensch works with a highly qualified team of developping engineers and manufacturing specialists to maintain the high product quality and to assert and improve its position as a worldwide market leader.

Since its foundation, the company never built ready-made instruments but strives for developping and producing customized solutions. Still today, universities, institutes of technology and other resarch facilities are cooperating in the development of new devices and optimization of methods.
